Gaiasoft’s work is based on the principle that change unfolds in patterns. Gaiasoft™ collects patterns within templates. These developmental patterns (templates) enable the inherent wisdom of the system to emerge and be shared. When effective adaptations occur within aligned patterns, these ‘best practices’ can influence and accelerate the performance of the whole system.
Each Gaiasoft template contains the pattern for a part of an organization’s overall system . At the highest level, the organization’s template lays out its goals and core work. At each operating sub-level, templates reflect the system’s higher- level purposes yet are adapted to the unique work of that particular level or group.
This template approach allows consistent replications, adaptations and reporting to occur throughout an overall system, from local to global perspectives. For instance, using Gaiasoft’s template approach a city can align with a state and a state can align with the nation and the nation can align with and contribute to a global issue such as climate change, healthcare, education or other purposes common to all participants.

The Gaiasoft template methodology mirrors the system’s (organization, government, initiative) complete cycle of change. Like any living system, this operational infrastructure is always adapting. Inherent in the template approach is the ability for the system to continuously learn, renew and revitalize itself.
The Gaiasoft approach is scalable to the widest, most inclusive reach and applicable at the deepest, the most individual level of engagement – from personal to global participation.
Using templates to align individual acts to the goals of the organization is at the heart of Gaiasoft. From a client’s first workshop through the tailoring a Gaiasoft purpose-specific template (ie climate change template) to the design of sub-templates for departments and engagement of individuals who form communities within an organization, the Gaiasoft approach keeps the overall goals in focus. At every step and every level Gaiasoft enables people to align, collaborate, monitor, report, evaluate and display their work as all parts move towards shared goals.
The work done by the Berkana Institute (diagrammed here) reflects the Gaiasoft approach as people who share values move from a network engaged in their individual work to joining clusters that become communities. Communities-of-interest develop templates. When members of a community-of-interest implement the same template in many places, they become a system-of-influence able to rapidly and consistently transform a large system. At each level there is choice and adaptation, with no loss of core purpose or direction.

Meshworking is an open interplay of people and resources within a system, a style of working that overcomes boundaries and enables universal sharing and collaboration to achieve a goal.
Meshworking is both a core Gaiasoft design principle and a technology-based capability that complements the effectiveness of Gaiasoft templates. A meshwork connects people around the elements of a template. As people share knowledge and learn, the template itself is upgraded and enhanced.
As a living system, a meshwork has a lifecycle. It begins with connecting people and grows as templates are developed, work is organized around the template, innovation is found and the adapted template is replicated. The entire system gains the knowledge that was discovered by that adaptation, enabling and implementing large-scale, resilient change.
Gaiasoft's meshworks organize people around places and goals matching complimentary roles. Meshworks facilitate beneficial connections between people and resources, fast-tracking collaboration, learning and exchange of value. Every person and organization within the meshwork can learn from the experience of every other.
When Gaiasoft's templates and meshworking are in place, an organization learns easily, efficiently and dependably with innovations improving day-to-day operations. Meshwork members experience unconstrained system-wide access to ideas and resources that enable them to develop and benefit from collective wisdom, creations, innovations and others’ successful changes. Innovation can come from, and be used by, anyone, anywhere.
